Asbestos is a mineral which is formed naturally from the breakdown of rocks. It was used in the manufacture of many types of materials, including shipyards, insulation and fireproofing for buildings. There are several types of asbestos which can be found in nearly all parts of the United States. One particular group of asbestos known as mesothelioma originates mainly from exposure to benzene or other aromatic hydrocarbons found in the production process.

Michigan Mesothelioma Lawyers for Athletes; It’s no secret that athletes are at higher risk for developing mesothelioma than the average person. This is due to their position on the field or court, where they are subject to more physical contact with other players and balls. Additionally, many professional athletes will play multiple years and possibly move from one team to another. This means that there are multiple opportunities for exposure to asbestos fibers in their work environment and home life.

What is Mesothelioma and Symptoms Athletes Should Take Note of?

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that develops in the mesothelium, the membrane that covers some internal organs and blood vessels. This cancer is typically caused by exposure to asbestos. There are several types of asbestos, but the most common type for mesothelioma is chrysotile asbestos. This mineral is found naturally in soil and rocks throughout the world, but it was also mined from rocks and extracted from talc used in products like insulation and friction materials. Asbestos was once used extensively in construction materials and buildings but has since been banned in many countries because of its harmful effects on human health.

Mesothelioma Symptoms: How to Identify if You Have It

Mesothelioma symptoms vary depending on where the mesothelium is affected, how much exposure you had over time, and your genetic makeup.

If you have pleural mesothelioma (in this case affecting your lungs), then you may experience coughing up blood, shortness of breath or chest pain; if you have peritoneal mesothelioma (affecting your abdomen), then you may experience abdominal pain or nausea.

Athletes Asbestos Verdicts Awarded to Michigan Workers.

A number of former Michigan athletes who developed mesothelioma after working in a Goodyear plant have been awarded a total of $7.5 million in a settlement with the company.

The workers, who were employed at the plant in Zeeland, Mich., filed suit against Goodyear in 1997, claiming that they were exposed to asbestos while performing tasks such as removing insulation and drilling holes in pipes.

Goodyear has denied any wrongdoing and argued that it had no legal duty to warn employees about the dangers of exposure to asbestos fibers. But after an eight-week trial and more than 100 witnesses for the plaintiffs, the jury found that Goodyear did owe them compensation for their injuries.

The amount was calculated at $1 million per person, with each person receiving $250,000 from Goodyear.

Athletes State Departments Overseeing Michigan’s Asbestos Laws.

Michigan’s asbestos laws are currently being watched by athletes and sports officials. The state is the only one that has not yet banned asbestos in any form, including the mineral insulation known as friable asbestos.

The state’s Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is responsible for overseeing all aspects of Michigan’s asbestos regulations. The DEQ has also been criticized for not doing enough to enforce these regulations, according to an article published on July 29th by MLive.com.

The article states that several athletes and sports officials have contacted the DEQ about their concerns over Michigan’s current attitudes toward asbestos safety. Some of these people include Olympic gold medal winner swimmer Katie Ledecky and former NFL star Ray Lewis.

Ledecky told MLive.com that she believes that “asbestos kills people.” She added that she would like to see a ban on all forms of asbestos in order to save lives and prevent future deaths from exposure to toxic materials like this one.”
