Bulgaria vs. Hungary
In Group G of Euro 2024 qualifying, the bottom-placed nation Bulgaria is set to face the high-flying leaders Hungary on Thursday evening. Originally scheduled to take place at Stadion Hristo Botev in Plovdiv, the venue has been changed to the Vasil Levski National Stadium in Sofia due to ongoing construction work, a decision criticized by the Hungarian federation as “unsportsmanlike” earlier this week.
Bulgaria enters their last two fixtures of 2023 with a new manager in charge, following the departure of Mladen Krstajic last month. The decision to part ways was attributed to “unsatisfactory results” during a nine-game winless streak dating back to November of the previous year.
Bulgaria vs. Hungary
Krstajic’s last match in charge was a 2-0 friendly defeat against Albania, which followed a disappointing home loss to Lithuania – ranked 134th in the world – by the same scoreline in Euro 2024 qualifying. This result left Bulgaria at the bottom of Group G without a win from six matches.
The Bulgarian Football Union revealed earlier this month that Ilian Iliev would assume the role of the national team’s head coach. Notably, Iliev will continue his duties as the head coach of first division team Cherno More Varna, presently in contention with CSKA Sofia for the league title.
What to remember – Bulgaria vs. Hungary
In his first home game in charge of Bulgaria, Iliev aims to make an immediate impact. However, success on Thursday appears to be a challenging task against an in-form Hungary side eager to secure their qualification for Euro 2024.
The visitors, who can clinch the top spot in Group G with a victory in Sofia, easily secured a win in the reverse fixture earlier this year. They are expected to face little difficulty in emerging victorious against the Lions once again.
